BUS3Business/Law/Lifestyle/WildLifeKashmir Pashmina gets Geographical IndicationNew Delhi, Sep 25 IANS Kashmiri artisans, who perfected the art of making handmade Pashmina for years, will now have exclusive rights over the Kashmir Pashmina brand, with the central government declaring it as Geographical Indication GI, an intellectual property right. GI is a name or sign used on certain products that corresponds to a specific geographical location.Handcraft shawls, stole and scarves, made from the fine wool of Pashmina goat, are sought after by buyers in India as well as abroad. The Sep 12 notification of the central government would ensure bigger profits to Pashmina workers. The announcement came following an agreement between Kashmir Handmade Pashmina Promotion Trust KHPPT, Crafts Development Institute CDI, Tahafuz, an association of Pashmina workers, and Wildlife Trust of India WTI.Experts said traditional Pashmina workers who developed the Kashmir Pashmina brand had got a raw deal, as they were shunted out of the market due to stiff competition from mill-made Pashmina goods. Low-priced machine-made Pashmina outweighed the expensive and limited number of handmade Pashmina products in the markets, while the rift between traditional Pashmina workers and mill owners widened over the control of larger market share and profits."We pointed out to the government that over 600 years of goodwill created by Kashmir Pashmina workers was being used by those who had nothing to do with the product." said Aniruddha Mookerjee of WTI and trustee of the KHPPT. "The very basis of traditional Pashmina in Kashmir is hand cleaning and hand spinning, two activities that are run entirely by women. "If machines are used to carry out these works, thousands of women workers will be out of jobs," Mookerjee said. The Pashmina shawl was promoted as alternative to Shahtoosh shawl that is made from the wool of the endangered Tibetan Antelope, also known as Chiru. This high-altitude dwelling animal is mainly found in China's Tibet region.Although the Shahtoosh trade was banned in India, the illegal trade continued for a long time, threatening the existence of the Chiru. In India, the Tibetan Antelope is protected by Wildlife Protection Act 1972.In 2001, WTI conducted a census of Shahtoosh workers in the Kashmir valley which found that the trade was still active there. In response, a campaign was launched to sensitise people to give up Shahtoosh trade and switch over to Pashmina.--Indo-Asian News Servicesnb/jg430 Words25091102

London, Sept 8 ANI: 'Sex and the City' lovers will get a chance to dress like their favourite stars, when a clothing line inspired by the hit TV series goes on sale at Marks and Spencer stores in the UK next month. The British high street chain has inked a five-million-pound deal with Sex and the City stylist Patricia Field in this respect. Field showcased her new collection at the New York Fashion Week, at the spring/summer 2009 fashion show, which opened this weekend. The models walked down the ramp as drag queens in gigantic Dusty Springfield-style wigs, iconic dresses and ensembles, inspired by the hit television series and the movie. The collection included flirty, 1950's-style, puffball dresses in scarlet polka-dot jacquard and rose-print taffeta, which will cost 75 pounds and 99 pounds, and a turquoise, angel-sleeved, silk shift, based on the dress Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker wore in the "Baby Shower Scene" in the film. The new clothing line also included a black, sequined catsuit, costing 99 pounds, and a skin-tight, black and white striped military jacket at 75 pounds, worn with gold leggings, similar to the style of Samantha, played by Kim Cattrall. "If I can wear the clothes, anybody can. Fashion is about enjoying clothes and having fun; it's not about age," the Telegraph quoted Field as saying. Kate Bostock, the executive director of all clothing at Marks and Spencer, described the Patricia Field collection, developed with co-designer, David Dalrymple, as one of the most adventurous projects in the British high street chain's history."It's the perfect marriage. She knows her audience, we have the customers and M and S customers love Sex and the City," said Bostock. The Patricia Field collection for M and S will feature 40 dresses, starting as low as 40 pounds, in sizes 8-20, as well as tights, shoes, and scarves, from 15 pounds and graffiti-print shoppers, at 2 pounds. London, Sept 7 ANI: English pop singer Victoria Beckham has revealed that her lack of closet space is stressing her out.Posh Spice, who has an amazing collection of extravagant clothes, shoes and handbags, told pals that the rooms at the family's 10million pounds LA mansion are so overflowed with her attires that she is finding it hard to manage them."Victoria's stuff takes up the space of an average family home and it's just about fit to burst. When they were looking at property in LA, it wasn't just about needing room for the children - it was also about the clothes," the Mirror quoted a pal of hers as saying."Victoria has the largest walk-in wardrobe you have ever seen. It's like an Aladdin's cave. And as well as that she has two other rooms dedicated to storage. There are drawers and boxes full of sunglasses, scarves, bracelets, hats, gloves, belts, all labelled, coded by colour and some by designer."She's having to ship tons of things back home to England because there simply isn't enough room any more," the pal said. The pal revealed that mum-of-three Victoria's fabulous collection of handbags and shoes alone take up an entire room, while other rooms have rails and rails of clothes.Victoria's designer shoe collection is thought to be worth more than 100,000 pounds and she will have as many as 200 boxes at any one time. But they will last her just two or three months."Victoria loves her boots, but the LA climate doesn't suit them. So most of those are in storage back at home in the UK, as are her winter woollies, cashmere jumpers and coats," her friend said.Victoria's collection of handbags is worth an astonishing 250,000 pounds. And her obsession with designer Hermes shows no sign of letting up."Victoria lives and dies for her Hermes bags. She jokes that they're her 'Do you know who I am' bags. But she loves a bargain too. She'll go nosing in the charity shops whenever she gets the chance," the friend added. Many of their unwanted clothes and accessories go to charities. ANI
